I DID NOT WAIT TO SEE SOMEONE LIKE ME IN THE SPACE. I STEPPED INTO IT.
My work is rooted in storytelling, connection, representation, and creating space for others to imagine more for themselves.
I’m Jamie Wetrade-Stevenson, a Tłı̨chǫ creative, photographer, entrepreneur, speaker, and workshop facilitator raised in Behchokǫ̀ and based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
IT STARTED WITH AN IPAD AND A DREAM. LITERALLY.
I discovered photography when I was 14. Before I owned a camera, I was teaching myself how to edit photos on an iPad, curious about what an image could become and how photography could communicate something deeper than what was immediately visible.
Not long after, I held a camera for the first time. At 18, I started my business without a perfect roadmap or every answer figured out. I simply knew I wanted to create, so I kept going.
Over the years, I photographed everything from families and weddings to community gatherings, events, portraits, fashion, editorial projects, and commercial campaigns. Each experience strengthened my creative eye and helped me understand where my work felt most meaningful.
Eventually, I found my strongest rhythm in event, portrait, editorial, and commercial photography.
PHOTOGRAPHY OPENED THE DOOR. CREATIVITY, EDUCATION, AND COMMUNITY WIDENED THE PATH.
As my career grew, people began inviting me to contribute beyond photography—to speak about my journey, share what I had learned about entrepreneurship, participate in panels and podcasts, and facilitate workshops and programs.
I realized that I did not only want to create images. I wanted to share knowledge, support ideas, connect with people, and talk honestly about what it takes to build a creative career.
Today, my work includes photography, creative project support, workshops, and speaking engagements. Each part is different, but none of it feels separate.
It all comes back to storytelling, possibility, and helping people feel seen.
VISIBILITY MATTERS MORE THAN WE SOMETIMES REALIZE.
When I first entered the photography industry, I did not see many people who looked like me.
I stepped into the work without fully realizing that simply being there could mean something to someone else.
Years later, young people from my community began coming up to me and saying they loved seeing me do this work. Some told me they wanted to become photographers. Others said they wanted to start businesses or explore creative careers of their own.
Those conversations changed the way I understood my purpose.
I still care deeply about creating meaningful, high-quality work. But I also understand that my presence carries a message.
It says there is room for us here. It says your location does not have to limit your vision. It says you do not have to wait until you see the perfect example before beginning.
Sometimes, you become the example you once needed.
HOW I WORK
I approach every project with curiosity and collaboration.
Before I begin creating, I want to understand the bigger picture. What are you trying to communicate? Who are you hoping to reach? What should people feel when they experience the final work?
From there, I bring together creative thinking, organization, observation, and clear communication to guide the project forward.
I value professionalism, but I do not believe professionalism has to feel cold or overly formal.
I want people to feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, and being part of the process.
Whether I am photographing a conference, developing a creative concept, facilitating a workshop, or speaking to a room, I want the experience to feel thoughtful, grounded, and human.
